Scott Goldfarb Week 3

What questions, concerns, ideas, or provocations were sparked by the article and the hidden bias test you took?
- What are key connections you are making (or have experienced) between bias, activism and artistic practice?
(30 points)

One of the main questions I have is what this data that they are collecting through the tests will be used for? I think research based on this could be advanced to affect policy changes or through other avenues. A concern I had taking the sexuality bias test was how it simplified sexuality down to just gay and straight, without bringing into the test the fluidity of it. While I understand it can be difficult to represent all facets of sexuality in a test like this, I think it would be interesting to see one that did, as I know I got some of the response 'wrong' on the test because of my own assumption of sexualities being a spectrum. While the test showed me no automatic preferences, I can see the connection between all of these as activism can be driven by changing biases. Art activism of our time seems to be mainly focused on this alone, whether it be race, gender, or sexual biases. These driving forces behind art activism are intertwined with research like this assignment, as people try to change perceptions of other people through arts and sciences.

For example, for the Tate piece felt the need to expose what history has done to  people. Each level exposed how much each person was taken advantage of in service of someone  else. For the rumors of war piece exposed the whole idealism of the past resurrecting a past historical  leader to make sure that the event does not happen again. The Bracero monument exposed all of the  work that the people of that time had done in order to make sure that not another person is taken  advantage of again. But truth be told, all of these monuments have come with some sort of backlash.  The bracero monument had gotten criticism for stating that the braceros were free to do what they  wished. From what the article had stated that was not the truth. It was merely one persons  interpretation of what a bracero was, b...
