Jake Jolley - Theater of Witness - Week 9

Once you have read both chapters, analyze how some of the twelve guiding principles outlined in the first chapter you read were evident in the case study described in the chapter you chose to read. What strategies did the artist employ in working with that specific group of people? What questions emerge? Write a blog post with your reflections.

- For my side of the assignment, I decided to do the section on refugees and immigrants, titled "Death is an Everyday Thing". The director artist worked with three cultures in 3 different performance pieces. The foundation of not knowing was found in the literal not knowing anything about the subjects of the performance before she met them and started the project with them, allowing the artist to work with an open mind. The artist bore witness to the individual stories and let them be told in their own ways to craft the stories in their own ways. I did not necessarily see any of the "medicine" in the stories or performances themselves, but the medicine could very well have also been the effects of the story on the audience and how it affected their attitudes moving foreword. The blessing is the center of the wound, showed through the objects of the stories and how their own experiences affected them. The audience listened in 360 with the depth and truth to the stories, an example given could be in how the song written by the Vietnamese teen and its ability to transform a rowdy group of high schoolers into a silent attentive group. The group became the vessel in their ability to support each other and portray their stories., while different, as one, to leave a lasting impact. The Paradox occurred in the performers themselves through the various meanings their own stories had to them as well as the various meanings the stories had the audience. The author found the gold in the Vietnamese boy's stories through the illegal use of the justice system towards them as well as the racial profiling used against them. In preparation for the performance with the Russian jew's they often ran into issues of the stubborness of the performers, but were able to turn it into a better product through that. At the end of the production, the audience was able to fall in love with the performers through their matched emotions in their stories, demonstrated by the young man jumping onto the stage during bows and giving performer flowers. In closing, all of the performers had to trust the process overall in order to achieve the outcome, their stories and actions allowed everyone to be able to top embody them and complete the process.

Emmanuel Bradshaw-Monuments article-wk4

While reading some of the monuments pieces I felt as if each of them had something that they  needed to prove. For example, for the Tate piece felt the need to expose what history has done to  people. Each level exposed how much each person was taken advantage of in service of someone  else. For the rumors of war piece exposed the whole idealism of the past resurrecting a past historical  leader to make sure that the event does not happen again. The Bracero monument exposed all of the  work that the people of that time had done in order to make sure that not another person is taken  advantage of again. But truth be told, all of these monuments have come with some sort of backlash.  The bracero monument had gotten criticism for stating that the braceros were free to do what they  wished. From what the article had stated that was not the truth. It was merely one persons  interpretation of what a bracero was, b...
