Hashtag Politics
Politics through social media is a tricky thing. Considering the wide reach that social media has to the world's population, social media can be used as a tool for serious change and as a form of activism. However, the other side of social media can be very fake and users can use it to appear "#woke" by what they post and the hashtags they use. One positive use of social media as activism is the #metoo movement to stand up against sexual assault in Hollywood. This movement gave a voice and a platform for millions of victims to share their stories, knowing that they would be supported through this hashtag.
Alienation Effect
Whenever I see Brecht theater, it is always a clear signature and an emotional jolt. Being honest, it is not my favorite form of theatre, simply because I like being immersed into the world and connecting with the characters on stage. I think that his opinion that theatre is emotional manipulation is valid in some ways, but I don't agree that it is all that bad. Being that Brecht forcefully removes you from the world, it makes it hard to enjoy the experience, if not done correctly. I think a Brechtian performance can stand very effective if executed well and for a specific purpose.
Anger works best when you have a moral high ground.
There is a difference between lashing out and standing up for something. Creating a difference and making a change through your anger is only affective if planned well. For example, Malcolm X in the Black Power movement which has been reborn in the Black Lives Matter movement currently. On the other hand, students at Calarts who place posters up about our president out of anger without a clear intention or plan is an example of lashing out. Which often times, does more harm than it does good.
