How do context and identity impact the form and meaning of these artistic projects?
Identity exists as a through line between the three monuments mentioned in these articles. Kehinde Wiley's "Rumors of War", Dan Medina's Bracero Monument, and Kara Walker's "Fons Americanus". Considering that America was built on racism and many of the present day statues are of white males, and some of Confederate officials, it is about time that these images and figures were dismantled. Our society is rapidly changing, so the existence of "Rumors or War" and the "Tate Modern" fountain help drive conversations and provide visibility for minorities and for those who built this country.
I especially connected with "Rumors of War" and the fact that the man was a millennial guy with street clothing on. This goes to show how strong the voices of the upcoming generations are. Kehinde Wiley's work is a great example of being the change you want to see in the world and how to "comment on the world around you" through your artistic practice (James Baldwin).
