Open the prisons, disband the army:
1. Correctional systems are corrupt
2. Prison barracks and army barracks are eerily similar
3. Being in the army is akin to being in prison
4. No law is universal
5. Peace is just a time to prepare for war
I chose this article because prisons are a topic of great interest for me. It is very easy to talk about all the faults of the prison system in our country, and others. There are individuals who are incarcerated for years on false charges; even condemned to death. Additionally, there are problems with a disproportionate number of certain races being incarcerated. However, the idea that prisons are evil and that they need to be disbanded is completely absurd to me. Yes, there may be people in those prisons who should not be; but the large majority of those people deserve to be there. I do not believe that laws should be subjective. Whether we like to admit it or not; we are part of one of the most successful governmental structures that exist on this earth today. Obviously, there are things that could be tweaked, but the way in which we enforce our laws on the people who break them should not. It should not matter whether a person is trying to steal food in order to feed their family; stealing is unlawful (under our and most country's laws) and more importantly, amoral. If we were to release the prisoners and be more lenient with them, we must be okay with having criminals as our neighbors, or criminals interacting with our young children. I understand I just used a very blatant slippery slope fallacy in that example, but that is the reality we will have to face if we do not incarcerate people who have done things against the law. In my opinion, there can be no exceptions. For whatever reason, if I am starving and have to resort to steal to feed myself, and do so without getting caught. I am still acting in a deeply immoral way, that I need to recognize in myself. Even though I would do anything to keep myself alive, in any situation, at the end of the day; stealing is not something righteously moral person does. The part of the article which I enjoyed the most was the statement that peace is just a preparation for war. This is accurate. War has always been, and will always be part of the human condition. Many of us try to fight that notion, but it will never go away. A country who has used their peace time to fortify themselves militarily will be must better equipped to engage in a justified war; than one who has not.
Revolution now and forever:
1. Revolution is not a new concept
2. The oppressed overtake the oppressor and become the oppressor
3. Patriotism is not necessarily a good thing
4. Human dignity is an exchange of monetary value
5. It is time for the East to rise
Firstly, this person is obviously socialistic/communistic in their monetary views of government and economy. I don't usually have a problem with these views, despite them being slightly different from my own. I am a capitalist, but identify with many socialist programs that are beneficial. It is true that human dignity is exchanged for monetary value. It is a very sad sight to see everything costing so much and people being looked at for their assets rather than their character. I try to have very humanitarian views on the world, but if I was running a business and hiring; the best person for the job gets the job. It shouldn't matter what they look like, or how nice they are to me. I place high value on production and hard work, rather than appeasing the masses. If we are talking about the East being superior to the West, you can argue both ways. There are benefits to the East's way of doing things, and there are benefits to the West's way of doing things. The West has been on top for a long time, and we are overdue for a change in world power dynamics. However, if we hypothesis an all out battle for the supremacy of East vs West I am going to have to side with the West's technological military superiority, and extension of power throughout the world to win the day. In no way would it be an easy fight. If we were talking about the western World War Two generation; the West would have a much easier time than now. Our society has grown complacent, and soft in many ways; while many eastern countries have not. In war the side who can suffer more, without giving up, will win. Our pampered western lifestyle has made it hard for us to deal with things. If we have people in our society who get too flustered to even hear about topics that make them uncomfortable; what would those people do in dire life or death situations?
